BATAVIA, Ill., Aug. 16, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — ALDI has unveiled its definitive agreement to acquire Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, marking a pivotal step in the broader divestiture of Southeastern Grocers to various entities. This strategic move reinforces ALDI’s commitment to expansion, fortifying its capacity to offer outstanding products at the most competitive prices within the region.
“We warmly embrace the rich legacies of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket, both deeply embedded in the Southeast, and we eagerly anticipate the opportunity to serve these communities in the years ahead,” remarked Jason Hart, CEO of ALDI. “The timing was opportune to build upon our growth trajectory and facilitate substantial savings for Southeastern residents. This transaction aligns seamlessly with our overarching expansion strategy across the United States, which includes the opening of 120 new stores nationwide this year, culminating in a network of over 2,400 stores by year-end.”
Amidst a landscape where many retailers are retreating due to economic challenges, ALDI is embarking on an ambitious expansion course, underscoring its status as one of the nation’s most rapidly advancing grocery chains. The acquisition, centered on the Southeast, encompasses nearly 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket outlets situated across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
“This merger agreement stands as a testament to our transformative journey and the unwavering dedication of our committed associates, who tirelessly serve our communities,” affirmed Anthony Hucker, President, and CEO of Southeastern Grocers. “ALDI shares our vision of delivering exceptional quality, service, and value. This unique alliance will propel our business forward, benefiting our cherished customers, dedicated associates, and valued neighbors throughout the Southeast.”
The forthcoming union brings together three distinguished brands, each sharing an enduring commitment to delivering unparalleled grocery experiences while fostering positive change within their operational communities. ALDI’s presence was initially established in the Southeast during the mid-1990s, and since then, the company has invested an impressive $2.5 billion in the region. Most notably, ALDI deepened its regional footprint by inaugurating its 26th regional headquarters and distribution center in Loxley, Alabama. This strategic move aims to support the proliferation of new stores, with plans to introduce 20 ALDI locations in the area by the year’s close.
Southeastern Grocers, with roots dating back nearly a century, has etched an indelible mark in the region. From its inception, the company’s unwavering dedication to customers, compassionate associates, and exceptional products has significantly impacted the Southeast.
“ALDI is committed to upholding the standards of care, quality, and service at Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores, while we concurrently assess the transformation of select locations to the ALDI format, bolstering our ability to serve these newly entrusted communities,” Hart elaborated. “For those stores we choose not to convert, our intent is for them to continue their operations under the respected banners of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket.”
